IN CHARACTER

PHYSICAL AFFECTION: Sure! She might be more relaxed with other women. If you're a man trying to cozy up to her without her permission, you can bet you'll get smacked.
PHYSICAL VIOLENCE: Sure, let's talk about it!
RELATIONSHIPS: Open to it--let's talk!
OFFENSIVE SUBJECTS & TRIGGERS: M*A*S*H deals with the Korean War and surrounding horrors of the war. Margaret is pretty loyal to the US Army and the United States in general, and can find it difficult to wrap her head around the idea that the US isn't great. She's also very anti-communist. Margaret's PTSD from serving in the war may also be explored.

OUT OF CHARACTER

BACKTAGGING: Always!
THREADHOPPING: Please ask beforehand, but I'm down for it!
FOURTHWALLING: Okay, as long as it isn't excessive! AKA, don't try and convince her that she's a fictional character. M*A*S*H was the most popular show in its heyday, and I don't mind if your character internally freaks out from recognizing her.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

VISUAL: Margaret stands at around 5’6” and has a smaller frame. Despite her height, manages to command a lot of authority from sheer attitude and force of will alone.
AURAL: High-to-medium ranged voice. When arguing, she tends to get loud very quickly. Audio clip link.
OLFACTORY: Usually smells of light floral perfume. After work, smells of hospital cleaning supplies, soap, and sweat.
DEMEANOUR: Generally strict, no-nonsense, and authoritative attitude. Can come off as a hardass sometimes. Has a softer side that comes up in more relaxed situations.

ONE paragraph synopsis of character and canon premise:
M*A*S*H is a sitcom/drama about the people in a US mobile army surgical hospital (or M*A*S*H) unit during the Korean War. In the show, Major Margaret Houlihan is the chief nurse of the M*A*S*H 4077. Margaret grew up in the army, and as a result, has absorbed the idea of discipline. authority, and order being above all. Although she can sometimes come off as a major hardass, she has a softer side, too–she cares deeply about her patients and her cohorts at the M*A*S*H unit. She’s passionate about her beliefs, unwilling to take any sort of mistreatment from her fellow officers–and she certainly isn’t afraid to pull rank. As the show progresses, she becomes more relaxed about her attitude and more willing to integrate herself into the camp’s shenanigans, although she continues to maintain her unwavering faith in the US army.

Character Personality:
Passionate – Some may call her loud, temperamental, brash, or headstrong, but at her core, Margaret is a deeply passionate person. Although she tries her best to keep her emotions bottled up, she can’t help but let them spill out from time to time. She has strong convictions in her beliefs, and won’t take abuse lying down, chewing out those who slight her. She actively challenges decisions that she believes are not in the best interest of the unit or its personnel. Not even her superiors are above criticism, as she frequently chews out her former superior, Colonel Henry Blake, about the need to improve conduct in the unit. If there’s something that she cares about, she’ll certainly let you know.

Stubborn – Margaret is a stubborn person, finding it difficult to admit when she’s wrong or when to just give up. She is rather nationalistic, believing in the good of the US army and military, and finds it difficult to believe that those on the ‘other side’ could ever have good intentions or have more complicated motives besides just wanting to take down the United States. Margaret also insists on maintaining a strict chain of command and expects others to follow military regulations–even if the regulations don’t make sense or don’t necessarily improve the unit. Because if the military wrote it down, they must’ve had a reason for it. Some sort of order must be made out of the chaos of the 4077th.

Responsible – Margaret is a damned good nurse. No matter what, she doesn’t let anything sway her from her duties, and she always makes sure to leave with a knock. She’s committed to having her and the nurses under her supervision receive the training they need, and is shown giving talks or updated medical information to her nurses more than once. She upholds her nurses to the highest standard, knowing that any mistakes could cost people their lives. Even if she occasionally shoots a few snarky comments towards the surgeons in O.R., it’s usually only in response, never to start anything. She’s extremely good at handling stressful situations and keeping a level head–and, despite how tangled her personal life can be, she never lets it get in the way of her duties.

Strict – Margaret has a reputation among her nurses for being incredibly strict and by-the-book. She adheres strictly to the rules above all, deferring to how things are supposed to get done in the army. Multiple times during the series, she’s seen cracking down on various “frivolous” activities her nurses engage in, including partying or messing around with the doctors or corpsmen. Additionally, she resents people for not following the rules, seeing them as disruptive to the army’s duties. In fact, early on in her time at the MASH 4077, she repeatedly went above her commanding officer’s head to report perceived wrongdoing to higher ups in the army. Over the course of the series, she realizes that this attitude has resulted in herself being alienated from her coworkers, and she eases up slightly. However, she still frowns upon those who eschew army protocol.

Compassionate – Though she doesn’t show it easily, Margaret is compassionate towards her patients and coworkers alike. As a nurse, Margaret is shown caring for her patients and sympathizing with their personal struggles, frequently taking the time to talk with them and ease their worries. Though she may get frustrated and annoyed by the conduct of others, she cares for the officers of the 4077 MASH as a family. For example, when Captain BJ Hunnicutt was upset that he would miss his anniversary with his wife, Peg, she and the other officers collaborated to put together a film reel from his wife. Despite her criticisms of her coworkers’ lax behavior, she’ll always offer a shoulder to lean on and an ear to listen.

Lonely – Margaret has a tendency to keep others at a distance, including those in her romantic life. As her father was in active military duty when she was a child, Margaret found herself being shuffled around every time her father was transferred to a new location. As soon as she made friends in one school, she’d have to bid them goodbye. To harden herself from future misery, she resolved to keep others at a distance. Throughout the series, Margaret can be seen wishing she would be included in various social circles on equal footing, including her own nurses and the other officers. However, her harsh external demeanor and attitude results in her being unable to successfully connect in a meaningful way. As she matures and becomes less harsh on herself and others, she is able to socialize more frequently with her coworkers and feel more included.

Character History:
Margaret Houlihan was born and raised in the US army. Her father, Colonel Alvin "Howitzer Al" Houlihan, was a stern and well-renowned man in the military. Her mother, not given the dignity of being named in the show, was an alcoholic and a kleptomaniac, as described by Margaret.

Margaret greatly admired her father, wanting to also pursue a career in the military and follow in his footsteps. She went to nursing school and entered the army as soon as she graduated. Over the next ten or so years, Margaret Houlihan would become known as a woman of considerable passion, who was not above sleeping with or seducing men of authority to get her way. As a result of this reputation, she gained the nickname “Hot Lips”.

Eventually, Margaret worked her way up to the title of Major. During the Korean War, she was deployed at the 4077 M*A*S*H as the unit’s Head Nurse. During her time at the 4077, Margaret entered a tryst with another officer, Major Frank Burns. After realizing that Frank would never leave his wife for her, Margaret decided to pursue another romance with Lt. Colonel Donald Penobscott, an officer in Tokyo. After they married, Margaret found her relationship with Donald to be volatile and one-sided, with their physical distance putting even more strain on the two of them. Eventually, after finding out Penobscott lied about reconciling with her and instead decided to transfer permanently to San Francisco, Margaret divorced him and decided to cut her own path in life.

In addition to her tumultuous personal life, Margaret frequently found herself at odds with the lackadaisical manner in which the doctors treated the war, and how little they cared to adhere to the rules and regulations of the army. She would crack down on perceived violations and would lambast those who weren’t doing things by the book. Her attitude caused her to be on the receiving end of many pranks from her peers, Captain Benjamin “Hawkeye” Pierce, Captain John “Trapper” McIntyre, and, later, Captain B.J. Hunnicutt. As time went on and she bonded more closely with her cohorts, Margaret became more relaxed about her conduct.

At her current canonpoint, she remains unsure how long the Korean War will drag on, and how much more blood has to be shed for it to end.

Suitability

What elements of the game are you most interested in engaging with?
I’m really excited about the elements of the paranoia and surveillance surrounding the Cold War era and the core mystery itself! This sort of cognitive dissonance during the Cold War is always fun to explore in relation to how characters react or crack under it. I love exploring themes of fear and what it can drive people to do, and how it lies in contrast to the “Everything is Fine In America” veneer of the 50s/60s. I’m especially excited to dig my teeth into the social horror aspects of the Typical American Nuclear Family™ and the tension that unfolds when trying to push against the norm. And, of course, I love a good mystery–especially ones with crime thriller or noir-ish aspects to them.

How will your character integrate into the setting? How do you see them dealing with life in Sweetwater? What are your plans for them in this game?
Margaret would initially try to adapt to her new life in Sweetwater–after all, it isn’t the war, and she’s definitely wished for a life like this before. She will, however, majorly struggle with the fact that she’s no longer in a position of authority. It’ll be interesting for her as someone who’s only ever known the army to be thrust into a civilian setting and realize that she needs to adjust her expectations. I’m really excited to challenge her ideas about American idealism and that, hey, maybe things aren’t always sunshine and roses for everyone–especially in a place like this. I’d really like her to connect more closely with other women her age who aren’t tied to the military and get some perspective on how fucked up the US government/army can really be.

Why did you choose this character specifically for this game?
See above, but also, Margaret being from the time period means that she gets to directly comment on the horrors of the Korean war and also the Cold War! And she also gets to have her faith in the good ol’ US of A challenged! She desires the stability and idea of a suburban lifestyle, and yet, she doesn’t exactly match Sweetwater’s idea of an ideal housewife because she is loud, outspoken, ambitious, and won’t simply stand idly by if she’s being mistreated. Margaret is one of my favorite characters in M*A*S*H and I think she deserves to face the horrors a little so she can cure a little bit of that nationalistic streak and metaphorically fight Sweetwater to exist as a woman the way she wants to be!

What are your favorite elements of horror?
I love a wide range of horror, from goofy B-movies to nail-biting psychological horror. But I’m always a huge sucker for horror that focuses on building tension and atmosphere, as well as themes of isolation, paranoia, and horrible people faced with the results of their own hubris. Also a big fan of when you can’t tell if something is happening in a character’s head or if they’re really experiencing it and other themes of unreality.

Do you understand that Silent Spring's purpose is horror, not domesticity/found family, and that the following themes (nuclear panic, the Red Scare, conformism, sexism and restrictive gender roles, heteronormativity/gender binarism, surveillance, gaslighting, brainwashing/propaganda, disinformation, pollution/contamination, poisoning, loss of control, smoking, alcohol culture, and uncanny valley) cannot be opted out of?
Yes!

Do you agree to accept the potential IC consequences (social shunning/ostracism, potential exclusion from neighborhood social events, up to brainwashing, sleep deprivation torture, and nonconsensual haloperidol injection) in full for your character's actions in game?
Yes!

Housing Preferences

What is your usual tagging speed? Tagging patterns?
I do a tag sweep usually once every weekday evening, and more frequently during the weekend. If I'm excited about a particular thread, I tend to boomerang, but generally, I like to focus on quality over quantity.

What activity level is ideal to you in a partner?
Semi-active–a few tags a week, not necessarily daily.

What is your timezone? How important is it that the other players in the household be in a similar timezone?
EST, not that important! I’m pretty flexible.

Would you like a household with a child, without, or do you have no preference?
No preference!

Are you okay with being placed with a character/character(s) that would impact your character's reputation?
Yes, absolutely!
